The Alabama District News

October 2015

Greetings fellow riders, here we are winding down summer (or at least some of the summer heat). Football season is underway and that means that cooler weather cannot be far behind. With the cooler weather come many more opportunities to get out and ride and enjoy this great country of ours without overheating. We hope you have many fall rides planned for you and your chapter. Remember why you bought your Goldwing in the first place!

Later on in Oct is the Mississippi District Rally in Gulfport, Ms. This is a great venue and the Mississippi District Team always puts on a great event. We hope you are making plans to be there. Later in October, the Region A Rally will take place at the Lakepoint Lodge in Eufaula. The region team has been hard at work planning a fun weekend for all including the selection of the new Region A Couple of the Year. Dewey and Alice Cole have done a great job of representing both Region A and Alabama this past year and now our own Carl and Jan Breeding will be hoping to take their place. Please be there on Friday morning to show your support for Carl and Jan.

In closing please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families as well as all of our first responders and their families. When you see any of these folks out please say hello and give them a big thank you for what they do each and every day. We hope to see all of you out on the road,
Frank and Linda Teasley

Wing Ding is now in the history books and it was a good one. The weather was good and Huntsville really rolled out the Red Carpet for all of the Goldwingers in attendance. We hope that Huntsville Alabama is placed on the list for future Wing Dings.

Dewey & Alice Cole represented Region A in the Couple of the Year selection and did a great job. Region A was in large attendance for the selection and we are sure Dewey & Alice really appreciated the support.  Although they were robbed and not selected they will still be winners with us. While on the subject we have another couple that will be in the selection process at the Region A Rally October 29-30th. Carl & Jan Breeding will be in the selection and we need to be there to support them as they move forward in the Couple of the Year program.

The Mississippi Rally is the next one and Alabama has always had a great turnout. October 15-17th in Gulfport, Ms. They are in a new location and we are looking to have a good time so come on down and have a good time.

SAADD GREETINGS to all!

Oh boy what a busy month we have had!!  There has been so much going on that we haven’t had time to ‘stop and smell the roses’ as they say.  Even my lounge chair has been complaining about neglect and that’s pretty bad!  We had a GREAT TIME at Wing Ding this year in Huntsville!  The facilities, the programs and the participation was great and gosh what a ton of Goldwings and other motorcycles!  It was fabulous and the City of Huntsville did an outstanding job of preparing and planning for us to be there.  The Grand Parade on Saturday morning was outstanding with hundreds of motorcycles participating in an hour long guided ride through the back country that was breath taking at times.  WHAT AN EXPERIENCE and if you missed it, you really missed something.  As many of you know by now, Bill Hamilton of Birmingham was the grand prize winner of the new Goldwing Motorcycle.  Congrats Bill and we all are quite envious or you!

The next big event in our lives happened the next weekend with the Ride for Kids in Leeds AL.  That is a wonderful event and a lot of money was raised and donated to The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation at almost $64,000.  These kids and families certainly are challenged with some unbelievable tasks including surviving another day of life and with cancer and it is a great feeling to know that in some small way, we may have been able to help.  Our local Chapter A was 1st in donations from groups and Chapters and we ranked 4th overall which is GREAT!!!  GWRRA is always strong in this event and this year was no exception. Thanks to all who helped in this task including The Trike Man (Toot & Molly Robertson) and Ed & Toni Salva who personally donated greatly from Chapter A.

October 29 – 31 is the Southeast Region A Convention in Eufaula AL and this is promising to be another great event.  Make sure you have made your plans to attend and we will see you there!

Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family.  Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you.  Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime!  You deserve it!  We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, be safe out there.  That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.

I would love to see all of our members enrolled in the Levels program, but even if you are not interested in that, I hope you are interested in riding safely, and in helping your fellow riders arrive alive at their destination.  Please make an effort to take these classes on a recurring basis so you keep your skills current.

Ride safely, ride often, call a friend.

October is the month for some of the best riding in our area. The leaves are changing and the temperatures are nice for fall rides in the country. I always look forward to the Mississippi Rally and this month we will have the Region A Rally also.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone and talking about the new changes coming up in the GWRRA University. We will answer as many questions as we can and write down the ones we need to get answers for.

We plan to start seminars in January for all who are interested. Please let us know what seminars in the University you would like to have taught. We have enough Instructors that we can do almost any that are available and if need be we can do some twice if that is what it takes to provide everyone what they would like to have.

Please remember that Freedom isn’t Free and remember our folks who are in Harm’s Way, be they Military, Law Enforcement, EMTs or Firemen.

The next time you think about riding, call a friend, they are probably thinking the same thing.

Please ride Safe and Often

Well another Wing Ding has come and gone. If you were not there you missed a good one. The weather was great and the facilities were outstanding. I guess the only complaint I heard was the spot where they had the drill teams set up. Some nice bleachers in the shade were just there for their looks I guess. A lot of folks had to leave without seeing them all. I for one, standing out in the sun for that long is a little too much for my old wore out back and hips.

Dewey and Alice Cole should have been selected as International COY, but as you know there is a lot of scoring in the back ground that you don’t see on stage.

OCT is going to be a busy month with the MS Rally the third weekend then we wind down with the Region A Rally the 5th weekend. I hope to see a lot of you at all three events, or at least some of them.

By the way some are complaining about the weather in Billings in September. You need to look at the weather out there. The next ten days 75 to 82 for highs and 47 to 57 for the lows. That is good riding temps. I will see you there and yes I will ride.

Enjoy the weather get out and ride. Go visit another chapter.

Be safe

Hello everyone,

Some of y'all know us but for those who don't, we are Terry and Barbie Cleveland and we are the new Couple of the Year Coordinators for the Alabama District. Barbie and I have been members of GWRRA since 1997 and participate with Chapter N. We have held several different positions at the Chapter and District levels and we are very excited about taking on this new adventure. We would like to thank Frank and Linda Teasley for giving us this opportunity and look forward to working with them and the Alabama team.

Now, having said all that, I need some help. Chapter Directors, I need you to forward me your current Couple of The Year's contact info (name, phone number,e-mail) I need this info even if they are NOT planning on going through the selection at the Alabama Rally. Also , we would like to know when your Chapter is planning on naming a new Couple of the Year for 2016. Remember, that naming a Chapter Couple holds no obligation. It is strictly a reward for that couple. Our main goal is to make sure that every Chapter has a Couple of the Year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. Once again we are looking forward to (I will not say working again) having  fun with all y'all!
