The Alabama District News
Greetings fellow riders, fall has finally arrived. Football season is in full swing and that is a sign of some really great riding weather. We have been out and we hope all of you have as well. Since our last article we have been on the road and having a lot of fun. We have attended several chapter events including a very nice fun day with our friends at Fl1-D in Pensacola. The weather was perfect for the event as well as the ride to get there. Alabama was well represented with 4 chapters in attendance, chapters A, G, T and Y. A special thanks to Chapter Directors David and Dee Wessler and their team for allowing us to be part of a great weekend.
At this writing we have just gotten back from the Mississippi District Rally in Gulfport, a great weekend was had by all in attendance. The weather was a little warm on Thur and Friday but everyone woke up to some really great temps on Sat morning. Congratulations to Harry and Diane Shaffer and the entire District Team for putting on a fun rally. The new location in Gulfport was really nice and at closing it was announce they would be back there next year. If you missed this year, we hope everyone will make plans to be there next year. The Region A rally is only a few days away and we hope you are making plans to be there. If you are there on Friday, please plan to attend the Couple of the Year selection and support our own Carl and Jan Breeding as they attempt to become the next Region A Couple of the Year. Good luck guys! On that note we would also like to thank Dewey and Alice Cole for the wonderful job they have done in representing the Alabama District as well as Region A this past year as Couple of the Year. Thanks to both of you for a job well done!
In closing, please remember all of our men and women in uniform and all of our first responders and their families as they serve and protect us each day. When you see them please tell them thanks for all they do for us each and every day. We hope to see all of you out on the road,
We have just returned from the Mississippi Rally on the Gulf Coast. The rally was a really good one. Harry & Diane Schafer, the Mississippi District Directors, and their team did a great job. The weather could not have been better. We are certainly looking forward to next year’s rally.
The weather is changing, and might I add, rather quickly. The leaves are beginning to turn, and now is the time to plan those rides to see all the colors. Not only can you enjoy the colors and cooler weather, but you get to spend time with your chapter friends. It will not be long before the time changes (November 1) bringing with it shorter daylight hours. Less daylight and colder temperatures will shorten our riding opportunities.
If there is anything your chapter needs, please let us know. We are here to support you and your chapter.
SAADD GREETINGS to all! ☺
Have we had some beautiful riding weather or what?!?!?!? I know for Kathy and I, it has been awesome and we have taken advantage of it too. We have ridden a lot this month and had a GREAT TIME sharing with our GW family and friends and experienced some wonderful times together. We have had wonderful dinner rides, great visits with some other chapters like Chapter G in Enterprise at their meeting and many went to the Green Frog Get-Way with FL-1D in Pensacola too. I’m telling you, there is so much available for all of us to do and if you don’t take advantage of the opportunities, you will not get a second chance. Believe it or not, life is short and it waits for no one. Please don’t miss any of the blessings there for you to have some fun! Believe me, you will regret it one day!
Our Safety Weekend in Lincoln didn’t happen as planned but don’t think there are no other options. We will keep you posted on the up and coming events for safety training and make sure you are prepared to take advantage of the offerings when they become available. Remember that SAFETY is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things to keep in mind at ALL TIMES but ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE!! If you are not safe and something happens that hurts you or someone else, THE FUN IS OVER! We are blessed to be part of GWRRA that is one of the most if not the most safety focused motorcycle associations anywhere and each of you help make it that way. Thanks for your help and participation in our wonderful association and all of your participation in the SAFETY PROGRAMS offered by GWRRA. We love you for it!
We know of several of our friends and family that have experienced some physical issues over the last few weeks and months. We are so thankful that Sue Jackson is on her way to a full recovery from the fall and hip replacement she underwent this month. I know several others have had some problems that haven’t been quite as severe or serious but know that we love all of you and we are here for you if you need us. Gladys & Paul Luker from Chapter L in Monroeville still need our thoughts and prayers as they are still suffering some health issues now too. Gladys is doing better and Paul is scheduled for more surgery soon so continue to remember them often. Please let us know if you know of someone who needs our help, assistance or prayers so we can do all we can to aid in their needs too.
The MS Rally in Gulfport MS was really good and enjoyed by many. We had a few from our Chapter A family that participated and enjoyed the fun and fellowship with our MS friends and family. The participation, the fun, games, food and entertainment was great! Many new experiences were had with more memories made and friendships created and strengthened. What a great time and let me tell you, the ride from our home to Gulfport twice a day was AWESOME!!! Blessed with beautiful weather, safe conditions and a GREAT GOLDWING to take us over and bring us home each day! Oh what an experience!!!!!! WOW!!
We still have a few more events scheduled for the next few months and I hope you will do all you can to participate and have fun with us. The next big event as listed below is approaching quickly so don’t miss it:
October 29 – 31 is the Southeast Region A Convention in Eufaula AL and this is promising to be another great event. Make sure you have made your plans to attend and we will see you there!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, stay safe out there. That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.
As most of you are aware, we had to cancel the Rider Education weekend because the Honda plant wasn’t able to accommodate us at the last minute. We are trying to and a suitable place to hold an event in the spring at the beginning of the riding season. I would encourage the chapters to concentrate on seminars during the winter months, and try to get them and the First Aid/CPR training done while the weather isn’t too great. I know I am more willing to be stuck inside when it is cold and wet than when the sun is shining and the breezes are warm.
If your chapter needs the First Aid course brought to you, let us know and we will try to schedule a class at your location. We just need an area large enough to accommodate the attendees and the manikins as well as power for a laptop and projector. Jan and I typically will handle the northern chapters, and Robert and Gail will take care of the central ones. We can make arrangements for the southern ones before spring, we just need to try and get the members to attend.
Many of us continue to ride during the winter months, that is one of the wonderful things about living in the south, but don’t forget that there are still dangers out there. When it is cold and wet, don’t forget that ice forms on elevated roadways before it forms in other areas. Take time to stop and warm up occasionally. Use the buddy system, and check to see if the ones you are riding with need a break. If you perceive that they do, suggest that you would like one so they are not embarrassed and end up insisting on continuing. Most people are more willing to accommodate you needing a break, but are not willing to admit that they need one. It is not the macho thing to show weakness.
Use common sense, take a break when you need one, and slow down when the conditions require. Be safe so we can ride together.
Why is it you go off for a for 4 or 5 days and get back home and have two full days of work to do ? Today was one of those, yep tomorrow too. Guess that’s the price for having fun.
Got home from the Mississippi Rally yesterday and haven’t slowed down. Once again another good Rally. Harry and Dianne and the whole MS. Staff did a fantastic job with just a few minor glitches. Everyone had a good time and I hope everyone made it home safe.
Next week will be the Region A Rally but I guess by the time this gets in a newsletter it will be over. I hope Carl and Jan Breeding were announced as the new Region A COY. Dewey and Alice Cole have served Alabama and the Region well. Thanks guys for a job well done.
Veterans Day is just around the corner so everyone please celebrate with them in some way.
Remember all the military and first responders.
Already late with this so I will send it in.
