The Alabama District News
Greetings fellow riders, we were just celebrating Christmas a few days ago and now January is almost gone! Where does time go? January started off with several Chapters having New Years Day rides. Looking forward to February we have our first leadership training class of the year coming up on the 20th. We have an OCP class scheduled at the UAB Medical West Hospital training room, in Bessemer, AL. Please see the district website for more information. You DO NOT have to be an officer to attend this class. If you are interested please contact Roy and Anita Fosnight or call us. We will be glad to talk to you about the class and help you sign up.
The first rally of the season is the Florida District Rally to be held the 17th, 18th and 19th. We hope many of you will get the opportunity to attend and help kick off the 2016 rally season for Region A.
In closing, we would like to issue a special thanks to the Alabama District Team for a job well done in 2015. A District Director could not ask for a harder working group that can always be counted on to be there for the members. When you see them please take a moment to say thanks to all of them for all of the personal time and effort they put forth to serve you, the members of the Alabama District each and every day. It is our pleasure to serve you. Please remember our men and women in uniform and their families as well as all of our first responders and their families as they serve and protect us each day. We hope to see all of you out on the road. Please ride safely,
The 2016 District Officers Conference was well attended and Thanks to all of the Chapter Officers that were there.
One of the points we touched on was participation. Not just participating in your chapter but participation with other chapters. Over the years it seems that our chapters don’t visit other chapters as much. This year we would like for you to visit at least 4 chapters in Alabama. Not the ones that are really close but 4 that would be a good day ride or an over night trip. Just get out and visit.
Several chapters have scheduled a MFA class and we are glad to provide these for them. We like to do these during the winter months so everyone will be able to ride when the weather improves. If you need a class just give us a call and we can get it done for you.
If we can do anything for you just let us know.
SAADD GREETINGS to all!
The year is off to a great start with many activities already having taken place for many of us. 2016 looks to be one of the greatest years yet for all of us in GWRRA and I’m really excited to be part of it. I’ve heard many great stories of the good times had by so many on their New Year’s Day Rides this year even though the weather was not the best in many places but the food, fun and fellowship was excellent! That’s what it’s all about folks and we have to keep reminding ourselves that we are blessed to be part of the greatest association in the world, The Gold Wing Road Riders Association!
We had our Officers Conference in Gardendale this year and it was wonderful too. Frank and Linda Teasley are the new AL District Directors so this was their first official meeting and it was great! Thanks so much for all your hard work and efforts to make our experiences with GWRRA and the Alabama Districtso good and memorable! Good job and we look forward to much more fun and fellowship with our GW families!
The MS District Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for January 31st at the i: Paul B. Johnson State Park just south of Hattiesburg MS off Hwy 49. This event is always great with a tremendous variety of chili to choose from so be sure to have a good appetite when you go. We will take our own drinks and condiments to go along with chili as well as any desert item you wish. Plan for a wonderful ride over and a great time!
The AL N Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for February 13th at Steele AL. This is another great event and should be shared by many as they know how to do it too with the chili!
There is an OCP Class scheduled in Bessemer AL for February 20th. This is the class offered for all GW officers and others that have not taken it before. Officers are expected to take this as training to help keep the chapters focused and functioning as great fun, family units. It is a great class with some great instructors and it is full of very useful information that will not only help you with your experiences in GWRRA but will help you in everyday life too. Please sign up for this one day class and make your plans to attend as it will be very helpful to you in many ways. Contact Frank Teasley or Roy Fosnight or your local chapter director to let them know you want to participate and you can get all the details needed to register. You won’t be disappointed, I promise!
We have fun days scheduled on March 5th for AL Chapter Y in Gardendale AL and the AL Chapter Z & F Cookout is scheduled for March 19th. The Florida District Rally is also scheduled for March 17, 18 and 19 in Orlando FL. WOW!!!! Plenty of opportunities for fun already!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, stay safe out there. That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the get-together at Wintzell's in Guntersville on New Year's Day, thanks to the ones who came up with the idea, the organizers, and the Wintzell's staff. Service took a while, but that is to be expected when a hundred and five folks drop in at one time. Now that the holidays are over it is time to turn our thoughts toward spring.
I know, with the weather we've had lately, it is hard to think positive about outdoor activities, but once warmer weather is here it is too late to do some of the planning. I know Robert and Gail Brown have been busy teaching Medic First Aid classes, now Jan and I are getting the manikins so we can do some of the more northern chapters. The rest of the district needs to be thinking of their training needs and communicating them to us. There are a lot of things we can help with, but mind-reading is not one of them.
On the topic of training, I still need the Chapter Directors and Educators to be helping me find suitable sites for the riding courses. If you find sites that are suitable, flat, free of obstacles, with a well maintained surface, and able to be blocked off from other traffic, nominate it to me and I am more than willing to come check it out. The size requirement is 206 ft. X 310 ft. for the Advanced Rider's Course (ARC); 206 ft. X 310 ft. for a Trike Rider's Course (TRC), and the range MUST be approved by the District Educator for insurance and accreditation purposes. We also have to get permission from the property owner and provide them with assurance that we will do no damage to their facility. As of 29 January I am no longer working at a full time job, so I am more available to track down leads, but I need you to help identify possible candidate locations and a Point of Contact for me to talk to about the facility.
Have hope, Spring is on the way.
Wow got busy doing everything else and just realized it is News Letter Time.
While News Letters are on my mind we will do News Letter competition for district only.
They are making changes to get into the right year. There will not be a Region News Letter judging this time. If you want the 2015 Newsletters judged I need those 3 of your choice by FEB. 11st. For this next year I will need the 2016 Newsletters in October. I know it doesn't make sense to me either. New rules will be posted on line after March 11th.
Chapter of the Year packets I need by FEB. 1st so we can announce the winners at Chapter Y's fun day in March. When you're doing your Chapter of Year packet you need to have the manual and score sheets in front of you and do them each section at a time. When finished use the check off sheet and send all required paper work to me. It takes a lot of time to do these as everything has to be documented. There will be an updated rules and manual post on line after March 1st. They did want to confuse anyone with changes for this year.
Team applications and MOU’s have been changed so make sure you are using the right ones.
CD’s are responsible for all their chapters’ paper work. Make sure your team members are doing their jobs.
MEC’s new members and prospective new members have got to be called. Email is a last resort. Phoenix is trying to get actual count on who gets called so they are going to be, calling some of the new members to see if they were contacted and when. They will also be doing random calls to Chapter MEC's to see if they made the calls. Look out for number one Make the calls.
This is getting a little long so ride safe keep warm.
Thanks for your time
