The Alabama District News
Greetings fellow riders, we had a wonderful trip to Billings and Wing Ding this past month. We got to see many of this nations great sights including Mount Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yellowstone and many, many more. Would like to have stayed another month out there and saw what we know we missed but work and home demanded our attention. A very special thanks to all who attended from the Alabama District and especially the ones who came by the onsite registration table on Wednesday and spent some time with us. We had a great time meeting members from all over the world. That is just a reminder of why we belong to this great organization, the members who are willing to help at any time with a smile on their face and a song in their heart. Thanks again to all who worked with us on Wednesday.
This month brings on several events for everyone to take a look at and hopefully get to attend. The Mississippi District Rally is scheduled for Oct 13, 14, and 15 in Biloxi. Two weeks later the Region A Rally will be held in beautiful Eufaula, Al on Oct 27, 28, and 29. A special grand prize of a cruise on Wingers and Waves will be given away at closing and you must be present to win. A great prize to start off the new year with! We hope to see all of you at both events. Here in the Alabama District we have a funday scheduled on Oct 22. Chapter S in Russellville will host their funday, details will be posted on the district website soon so make plans to attend. Chapter D currently holds the District Scrapbook and will post the next giveaway very soon so keep an eye on the District website for further details. There are two Rider Ed courses scheduled for the upcoming season, both to be held at Troy University in Dothan. The first will be a TRC class on Oct 8th and the second will be an ARC on Nov 5th. Information and sign up information are currently on the District website. These will probably be the last classes taught this year so if you need either one we encourage you to sign up. Last but certainly not least is the annual Birmingham Veterans Day parade on Nov 11th. Information and times to follow.
In closing, please remember our men and women in uniform who serve and protect us each day along with their families as well as all of our first responders and their families. These are trying times for all of us but especially for all of these brave men and women. Please keep them in your prayers. Please remember to check the District website often for upcoming events and special announcements. We hope to see all of you out on the road.
How do you, as the Chapter Director, plan your Chapter calendar for each month? Do you even put out a calendar for the members so they will know what is happening?
One of the things we always try to do is check the District website to see what is going on for the upcoming month. What District is having their rally; is a chapter having a Fun Day or a picnic to which everyone is invited; is the District scrapbook being offered up for capture? These are things that should be on your calendar, and your chapter should make every effort to support them. If there are no events within the District, then try to plan things others will be interested in doing. Take suggestions from members; such as interesting places to see and restaurants to visit that are off the beaten path. The most important thing is to make your rides and events fun and to include as many of your members as possible. When you have your calendar complete, make sure it is distributed to your own members as well as the other chapters. You might be surprised who shows up at your event.
October is shaping up to be a very busy month. There are two rallies scheduled for this month. The Mississippi District Rally is the 13th – 15th and the Region A Rally will be the 27th – 29th. We hope to see you at one of the rallies.
SAADD GREETINGS to all!
What an amazing year this year has been! We have done a lot of riding with so many things happening and so much fun, it has been hard to keep up with. It’s amazing that we have so much happening already this month and it ain’t over yet! In some ways, it seems to be just getting started and I hope you are making plans for your second wind to take all of the last quarter events in too.
The BIG DANCE – WING DING is all over now and I know it was another wonderful event. It is the largest rally GWRRA puts on and it was in a beautiful place again where the scenery is spectacular with many more things to do than I’m sure you had time to get done. Also, during the festivities however, it was announced that next year, Wing Ding will be in Grapevine Texasin the same place it was several years ago. For many of those that went before, it was said to be one of the best venues available so look for a great time there! The month of October is going to be busy too with the MS District Rally schedule for October 13th thru 15th in Gulfport MS with the theme of Gold Winging to Old Hollywood. That is followed by the Region A - Steel Pony Rally in Eufaula AL on the 27th, 28th and 29th so fire up your steel pony and ride! These are always great events so be sure to make your plans to attend and participate and make more memories!! You’ll be glad you did and we certainly will be too.
REMEMBER!!! The Alabama District Rally for 2017 will be in Mobile AL, May 18 – 20 at the Ashbury Hotel & Suites. The theme for 2017 is SITCOM MANIA! Make your plans now to attend and be prepared to have more fun than a barrel of monkeys! It will be GREAT AGAIN!!! Put your thinking hats on and get your Talent Show Crews together and grace us with your entries in the talent show contest with your best sitcom endeavor! Just do it and make it FUN for all!!! Remember to get your registrations in ASAP and if you intend to partake in the Thursday evening meal, there is a $7.50 per person charge this year as the costs have skyrocketed and we have no choice but to charge for this great meal. Look for the slot on the registration forms for this and make sure you include your payment too. More info to follow!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, stay safe out there. That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.
This picture is not meant to suggest coming in close contact to buffalo or other wild animals, but it perfectly portrays my overall impression of our trip to Wing Ding in Billings. I can only hope our trip to Grapevine, TX next year can come close to being as enjoyable. I always enjoy meeting up with friends formed at past rallies and catching up with what has been happening; this time I was so busy seeing things I hadn’t experienced before that I scarcely had time to catch my breath before it was over. If you haven’t ridden the Beartooth Pass, you owe it to yourself to do so before you die!
We had an Advanced Rider Course (ARC) (two wheeled vehicles) on September 17th in Russellville, we had a total of 11 bikes and 19 participants. I want to convey my appreciation to the members of chapters H and S who helped with the setup of the range and moving cones so we could conduct the course smoothly. With the assistance of James Clayson and chapter M we have a TRC scheduled in Dothan at Troy State University on 8 October and an ARC on 15 October. Further courses will be announced once facilities are firmed up and instructors are available. We are going to be requiring a $25 per bike deposit to register for the classes, we plan to refund the fee to riders who actually show up and take the classes. It is not fair to others to reserve a seat and then not show up. We are limited to 12 bikes or trikes in a class, and need to ensure we have the spaces for folks who will show up.
We appreciate the help we have received in finding the ranges in Russellville and Dothan. These ranges allow us to provide the much needed riding classes for our members. Additional ranges need to be found in our state to accommodate the demand for riding classes. Finding these new ranges will minimize the distance the students have to travel in the state to take a riding class.
Please be aware of changing conditions and adjust your riding accordingly. Ride safe, ride often, call a friend.
Well the weather is fixing to make change from hot to cool then cold. From what I have been hearing we should expect a very cold winter this year. There are still some good riding left and a few more Rally’s and Chapter Events to participate in.
I am a little disappointed in Chapter participation for the Scrapbook Grabs. This was designed to bring chapters together and to support each other. It’s like a bunch of kids; Little Billy has a party he sees a lot of his friends are not there so he is disappointed. Then it is their time to have a party Billy says they did not come to mine so I am not going to theirs. Same thing happens at this party and soon it works its way around and after a while it is a party of one. Please support other chapters.
Everyone please check your membership cards. A lot of members are winding up on the expired members list and expiring list because they never received a notice. Chapter MEC’s are supposed to be contacting the expiring members.
In the last few months we have had several new old members to rejoin also we have had some new members recruited by expired members. (??? I know)
This is getting long so get out have fun and recruit. Check your own expiration date.
