The Alabama District News

January 2017

Greetings fellow riders, Linda and I wish to thank everyone for an exciting year for Alabama GWRRA. We have had some great times this year and we certainly hope you have as well. As we sit here and look forward to 2017 we think about what we would like to accomplish for Alabama GWRRA. First of all is to increase the fun and enjoyment for every member in the District. We have many events already on the schedule and expect many more to be developed in the coming months. Secondly is to increase the membership base throughout the District and Region as well. More members mean more folks participating and the natural progression is everyone has more fun. Fun is what keeps everyone happy and coming back. Let’s make 2017 the year of more FUN!

Coming in January are the annual New Year’s Day rides. Several chapters host rides all across the state and we hope that everyone can make it to one of these. Please check the District website for more info. Next is the first District scrapbook grab for 2017. Chapter D will be hosting the event on Jan 7th at the Western SIzzlin in Oxford, AL from 11AM until 1PM. Remember, this time of year, that you can travel on your bike/trike or in a 4 wheeler and count toward your chapters total. We have been having 4-5 chapters participate; we would like to see other chapters participate as well. This is a fun event and a great time to socialize with other chapters and all your friends that you may not see as much as you would like. Make a resolution to participate more this year and let this event be the kickoff for 2017. You have more FUN the more you participate! The next event in January is the annual Officers Conference to be held Jan 14th at the Gardendale Civic Center. We will begin around 9:30 AM. We would like to see ALL Chapter officers there. This is the one time a year we can all be together to learn more of what is going on in GWRRA and with the Region and the Alabama District. We will have refreshments and door prizes and along the way have a little fun as well. Please make plans to join us.

The 2017 rally season begins in March with the Florida rally. This event will be March 23rd thru the 25th. This is the annual kickoff to the rally season in Region A and the Florida District Team always does a great job and offers a great rally. We hope you will make plans to attend. Please don’t forget the Alabama District Rally in Mobile, Al May 18th thru 20th. We have lots of fun things for you do at the Rally as well as what the city of Mobile has to offer. Please put this FUN event on your calendar.

A very special thanks to the Alabama District Team for a great 2016 and we are looking forward to an even better 2017. Please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families and all of our first responders and their families. Please take time to say thank you when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks again to all the members of the Alabama GWRRA; we are proud of all of you. If you have any questions or comments please let us know. We always look forward to hearing from you. We hope to see everyone soon.

Hello, 2017, and, here we go. As we move forward, what would you, as a member of GWRRA, like us to try in Alabama this year? If you remember, several months ago, I asked for suggestions concerning the Traveling Scrapbook. The Scrapbook offers opportunities for Chapters to ride, visit their friends and have a good time. When all is said, and done, the chapter with the most captures and miles will have their Charter fees paid for a year. What an enjoyable and profitable way to spend some of your riding time.  However, it appears that only a few chapters are taking advantage of this, and it is the same chapters most of the time. If you remember or read the article several months ago, I asked for suggestions which would help get more chapters involved. As of the writing of this article, not one suggestion has been sent to us. So, here is one last chance to make that happen. If you have something you would like to propose, send it to Frank or any District Officer for consideration.

This will be our last article as the Assistant District Directors for North Alabama. We will be stepping out of this position as there are too many plates for us to manage. We will continue in the other positions we hold within the District and Region A. We do appreciate all of our members and all you do.

SAADD GREETINGS to all!

My Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. I hope your year has been rewarding AND fun and that all your dreams have come true!  We are all fortunate to be part of the greatest organization in the world that helps us have fun, make new friends and have experiences like you have never had before.  Your leadership works hard to try to make life fun for you and your chapters and provide many exciting things to do that are safe, educational and enlightening that make your life greater.  Be sure you do all you can to support them and tell them thanks occasionally so they will know you noticed.  Also be sure to participate as much as possible so the events and outings will be even more fun and fulfilling for everyone and I know you will get more out of it too. The more the merrier you know and you certainly can help make that happen!

I know many of the chapters have New Years Day Rides scheduled again this year.  Some of them have done this for many years like Chapter A in Mobile that will have their 35th ride this year and many are planning to attend.  They will be going to Ezell’s Fish Camp in Lavaca AL near Butler as they have done every year since it started and it will be another GREAT EVENT and excuse for a GREAT RIDE!  What a way to start the year off…….riding your Gold Wing!  Exciting for sure and the food and fellowship are AWESOME!  It’s a great event for the Ride for Kids and The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation as they donate the drawing money to that charity every year and they appreciate your help and donations too!

Our Officers Conference is scheduled for Jan 14 in Gardendale AL at the Gardendale Civic Center.  I hope all officers and others that would like to attend will make every effort to be there.  It will begin about 8 AM and run till the afternoon and this is a time where we can learn more about how our district works and what is ahead for the year.  It is another opportunity for you to share life with someone else and possibly be a positive influence that could make a real difference.  As I have said so many times before; activity breeds activity and that’s what we are all about.  Make plans to become even more active in the coming months and years and be amazed when it rubs off on others and you can see changes as a result of your activity too.

REMEMBER!!!  The Alabama District Rally for 2017 will be in Mobile AL, May 18 – 20 at the Ashbury Hotel & Suites.  The theme for 2017 is SITCOM MANIA!  Make your plans now to attend and be prepared to have a great time!  It will be a GREAT EVENT IF YOU help and participate!!!  Put your thinking caps on and get your Talent Show Crews together and grace us with your entries in the talent show contest with your best sitcom endeavor!  It will be FUN for all and we know you will make more wonderful memories!!! Remember to get your registrations in ASAP and if you want to have the Thursday evening meal with us, there is a $7.50 per person charge this year as the costs have skyrocketed and we have no choice but to charge for this great meal.  Look for the slot on the registration forms for this and make sure you include your payment when you register.  More info to follow as it becomes available!

Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family.  Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you.  Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime!  You deserve it!  We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, stay safe out there.  That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.

Veronica and I would like to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

2016 has been a pretty good year for the most of us. Maybe the new year will be even better.

We have done a good job recruiting this past year but we need to improve on retention. We still had a loss as for as members. A lot of them were the one to two year members. We failed somewhere in getting them involved. Did we make a good contact when they joined and never did a follow up or did they come to a meeting and felt out of place? We all need to work on this.

The next couple of months are going to be slow as for riding and outdoor activities, now is a good time to set up some seminars with the educators. CD’s get with your neighboring chapters and have a big class or two together.

Remember the district Rally will be in Mobile in May. The theme is sitcoms. Start getting an act together for the talent shows or costume shows.

For the chapter theme challenge do dioramas of your choice use your imagination?

This year we will have a line on the windshield Cover score sheet for the owner’s name. Last year we multiple members in the same chapter competing. This should help the judges.

We have three chapters that sent in news letters to be judged. They were put in the mail the 12th they are off to where it is really cold, but the couple judging them says they will get them back to me before the 1st.

There is still plenty of time to get chapter of the year packets to me.

This is getting a little long and I am late as usual.

Please stay in out of the cold and damp air we don't want anyone getting sick.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
