District News
  -- District Director

September, 2014.

I would like to thank all the Alabama chapters that have participated in the District Plaque grab and for helping to keep it on the move. The purpose of the traveling plaque is to promote member participation and the visitation of other chapters. One of our smallest chapters in Alabama has captured the plaque twice, and we would not be surprised if they don’t capture it several more times before the plaque is finished with its travels in April, 2015. The reward for the chapter with the most captures is, the Chapter will have their charter fees paid for 2016 and keep the Plaque for their chapter. The information of the location and next capture is posted on the District website, so work this activity into your chapter ride schedule.

September 6th is the District Picnic, and we are going to be back at the Confederate Memorial Park. Festivities will begin at 10 and admission is FREE. All you need to bring is yourself and plans for having a good time. Door prizes and a 50/25/25 will be offered. The past picnics have been well attended, and the weather has smiled favorably on us.

The following weekend is the Region A Rally in Eufaula.  Alabama will once again man the vendor gate. Max Tanner will be the contact during the rally. It would be much appreciated if each chapter director would let Max know what time each of their members will be willing to help.

Dewey and Alice Cole, the Alabama District Couple of the Year, will be in the selection for Region A Couple of the Year along with the couples from the other districts. They have visited many of the chapters in Alabama, other Districts in Region A, Districts outside Region A and Wing Ding. They have really been on the road. They need our support during the Couples selection on Friday morning, so plan on attending and making some noise for them.

The weekend of October 4th-5th will be our Safety Weekend at the Honda Manufacturing Facility in Lincoln. This is open to all Alabama GWRRA members at no cost. There are seminars, ARC, TRC and Medic First Aid available. The MFA will be both Saturday and Sunday morning. Here is the opportunity to move up or maintain your levels in Rider Education so make plans to attend. Remember, “The more you know the better it gets”.

Thanks again for all that you do. If you need anything just let us know.  We look forward to seeing you at the picnic or the Region A rally.

Greetings fellow riders, we would like to begin this month by thanking all of the chapters that participated in the region plaque grab this past weekend. We had chapters from Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Florida FL-1G was the chapter that captured the plaque. We hope everyone who attended had a great time and enjoyed their ride to the Irondale Café. Be on the lookout for the next time the plaque is to be given away and you and your chapter make plans to go get it. This (as is the Alabama Plaque) is a great opportunity for you and your chapter to travel together and have some fun. The Alabama plaque is on the move with Chapter F currently holding it. Make plans to take your chapter and capture the Alabama plaque. It is a great opportunity for fun and fellowship.
The Alabama District Picnic is coming up on Sept 6th at the Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury (really close to the peach park and all that delicious ice cream). We will start at 10AM and go until everyone has been fed at least twice and had some great fellowship and fun. Please make plans to join us and have some fun. The museum will be open and we have been told they have several new exhibits added since last year. We hope to see everyone there.
One week later is the Region A rally in Eufaula. The region staff always puts on a great rally and we hope everyone has already made plans to be there. A new region A couple of the year will be selected and our own Dewey and Alice Cole will be representing Alabama in the selection process. Make plans to be there and cheer them on.
We have two events in October, the first being the Safety Weekend at the Honda Plant in Lincoln, Al. All of the information is located on the district website. We hope to see all of you there. The final district rally in Region A will also be held in October on the 14th, 15th, and 16th in Gulfport Ms. The Mississippi rally is always fun and this one should be no different. We hope everyone will make plans to attend.
In closing, please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families and thank them for all of their sacrifices. Also remember all of our first responders who serve us each day. We still have some heat to put up with so remember to stay hydrated when riding. We hope to see everyone out on the road.

Are you having fun yet?  If not, you need to check in with your nearest GWRRA Chapter and your life will change.  We are all about having fun and we can prove it. We have more events planned with great local chapter rides mixed in that there is NO TIME TO BE BORED!  In September, we have the District Picnic on the 6th that will be at the Confederate Memorial Park near Prattville, the Region A Convention in Eufaula the 11th, 12th and 13th, AND the Ride for Kids event in Leeds on the 21st.  Wow, I’m tired just writing all this stuff down.  Just think of all the fun and fellowship we all will have going to and experiencing these FUN TIMES!!!  Let the Good Times Roll as they say somewhere in the country!  Don’t let anyone ever tell you that all we do is ride to eat.  We do a lot of that but that is not all we do.  We love people, fun, fellowship and experiencing new things and all of you help us do that.
Your local chapters have some great rides and events planned also and you must check out their calendars to see what is going on with them too.  Don’t forget that just because you are associated with your local chapter it doesn’t mean you can’t participate with any and/or all of the other chapters.  When you join GWRRA, you belong to the whole organization and all of the chapters. You are welcomed to attend any event or meeting with any chapter and you will be welcomed like you are at your local chapter and MAYBE even more-so.  It is great to experience other chapters’ lives too and they really do appreciate it!  You won’t be sorry you did!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family.  Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you.  We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please be safe out there.  That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.

Well the year is over half gone.  Where did it go?  It seems everyone is out riding and going places. “Time flies when you’re having fun.”  It looks like the Traveling Plaques, both Region and District, are getting lots of attention.

The District Rally for 2015 will be Halloween in MAY.  So, now is a good time to get your stuff for the talent shows, your Dioramas for the theme challenge, and your Mascot competition.  Halloween is just around the corner so there is a lot of good stuff on the shelves now (try Dollar Tree for a bargain).

On a good note, we have been doing a good job of recruiting this year. We have about 7 chapters that have gained some of their expired members back. Keep up the good work.  The sad note is we are still losing members. Everyone please work on retention. A lot of the members we are losing are the one year folks that we failed to get involved in one way or the other. The rest is folks that just don’t ride any more due to health or age.

I have got to send this. It is work time.
Hope to see you all in Eufaula for the Region Rally.

-- District Couple of the Year

August is almost over and the children are back in school.  Football is back in swing even.  It has been an exciting month for us.  We started off by visiting with our home chapter "N".  They had some visitors and we were glad to see everyone.  Chapter N's Couple of the Year is Gerald & Debbie Russell.
The 15th we went to Prattville and visited with Chapter Z.  They had some visitors other than us also.  We enjoyed our time with them.  We met their Couple of the Year, John & Cathy Shumway.  We even carried home a door prize.  Debbie Russell rode to their meeting with us.
The following week we headed to Breckenridge, Colorado for the Colorado District Convention.  We drove our car and Gerald & Debbie Russell rode with us.  WOW is the only way to describe the area.  Beautiful!  The rally was great.  They fed us Thursday evening hamburgers, hot dogs and watermelon and CAKE to celebrate their anniversary. Friday morning we attended the Couple of the Year selection.  They had several participates and they were all excellent Couple's of the Year.  They also had Individual Selection with 2 participates.  During the Opening Ceremonies Jon & Barb Pons resigned their job as Colorado District Directors and are in the process of moving to Florida.  Let's see, they are the International Couple of the Year and are now living in Region A Country.  That's nice!  Then Friday evening we had a sit down dinner and entertainment.  They do know how to have fun in Colorado.
Alabama N won a certificate for Largest Chapter in attendance outside their Region.  Dallas and Jimmy from Chapter N won certificates for Lighted Bike Show.  Alabama District won Largest District outside Colorado  District and Alabama Region won Largest Region.  I know Chapter N had a good time. They had 5 bikes and 1 car in attendance.  The car drove to the top of Pikes Peak and we bought T-shirts that says: Elevation: 14,110 Feet"
                                                                            Being This High
                                                                            Would Be Illegal
                                                                            In Most States!
Mark your calendar:  September 6th is the District Picnic at Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury.  Time: 10:00 A.M.
September 11, 12 and 13 is Region A Convention in Eufaula.  Let's Celebrate Freedom.  We are looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces there.
