February, 2015.

Our 2015 Officers Conference held on January 10th was well attended. We would like to Thank the officers who attended for making it a success. All of the chapters were well represented with many of their Team members present. The financial reports were completed along with new officer paperwork. Several chapters have new leadership and some have added new officers to help make their Team stronger. Thanks once again for attending.

An OCP class was held on January 1. Ten members from various Alabama chapters were in attendance. It is always a good class to take and Greg & Renee Dempsey made it very interesting. There will be a Horizons class on January 31 and February 1, that is a Saturday and half a day Sunday, in Bessemer. If you know of anyone who has not had this class, please encourage them to attend. This is a fun class with a lot of interaction between members. All of the classes are on the District website, so please take advantage of what is offered.

The riding season is, hopefully, just around the corner, and several chapters have already scheduled their Fun Days. The dates should be on their website along with the District web page. Put the dates on your ride calendar and participate with them. We always look forward to going to each one and having a good time.

Our District Rally will be happening in May. It is a Halloween theme so get your costume out and plan on being there. The Lake Point Lodge in Eufaula is a great place to hold a rally and we are in the planning stages to make this “one to remember.”

If we can do anything for you or your chapter, please contact us. We are here to help and support you.

Greetings fellow riders, January is almost in the books. 2015 is off with a bang. The annual Officers conference was held in Gardendale, Al this year and each Alabama chapter was represented. A special thanks to all CD’s and team members who participated. Financial reports were completed as well as new officer paperwork and in the process a few laughs were shared by all. We are looking forward to a great 2015. We are asking each Chapter to rededicate to more riding, visiting other chapters and the events they host, attending other district rallies, and of course right here in our home state, Wing Ding coming up in Sept in Huntsville.  Should be a great year!!
Our own District Rally is coming up in May. This year’s theme is HALLOWING, A SPRING SPOOKTACULAR, and we hope everyone will attend and help make this rally the best ever. Part of doing that is to not only attend the rally but to participate. Again this year we want to encourage every Chapter to participate in the “Talent” show. Last year we had a blast and are looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with this year. Remember, your skit does not have to be Halloween related to perform but use Halloween costumes when performing. Judging sheets are on the district website if you wish to see how the judges score each act. The talent show is about having fun so get your individual acts and chapter acts in the works and let’s have lots of fun. Also remember that the costume contest is Thursday night after dinner so break out your best and let’s have fun with this event as well.
The riding season is almost here and we hope each chapter has a ride calendar already completed or in the works. Lots of great places and really great events to see and do around our great state so get out and enjoy not only the sights and sounds of Alabama but also the camaraderie of being with your friends. Please remember to keep all the members of our armed forces and their families and our first responders and their families in our thoughts and prayers as they serve and protect us each day. Without them we would live in a very different world! Hope to see all of you out on the road.

Hello Everyone

Well here it is, the first of February and the weather is begging to warm up. If you are like me, you have not used the motorcycle as much these past few months as you would in the riding season. One of the ways I suggest we help ourselves is to get out a practice some of the basic skills in a parking lot somewhere. This process will help get everything back in working order. Talk to your chapter educator about holding a parking lot practice, get everyone together, and have some fun while getting you into the riding mode.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email or call me. I can and will help you get the training you want to ride safer. We all know that riding safer also means that we are able to relax a little more and have more fun.

Even though it doesn't seem like it when the cold winds of winter are screaming in your ears, it isn't long until the beautiful spring riding season will be upon us.  In addition to getting chapter members together to discuss possible destinations for chapter rides, we need to be planning for our safety and the safety of the other riders on the road.  We can impact our own actions and enhance our chances for survival by taking riding courses, but how do we influence the drivers on the highways so they are aware of our presence and vulnerability?  Perhaps by participating in Motorist Awareness events?  Talk to other people and explain the dangers present on the nation's highways.
In Alabama, we have had the opportunity for the last few years to all participate on one day in May by the chapters setting up a Motorist Awareness display and talking to Motorist stopping at the Alabama Welcome Centers.  Our chapters typically request Motorist Awareness packets from the GWRRA home office in Phoenix, Arizona at phone number 800-843-9460.  We set up tables with the literature and any other displays the chapter might think up, bring coolers full of ice and bottles of water to help get the attention of the motorist passing through, and spend that one day encouraging the motoring public to "Watch out for motorcycles" "Don’t text and drive" or other messages the members want to share.  We ask only that your chapter report the number of people you talk to during the event.  If the public wants to take the literature, by all means give it to them, that is what it is for, but don't make them feel obligated to do so, that is how so much of it ends up in restroom trash receptacles.
I have included a map to show the chapters where to set up their MAD Day, the date is 9 May this year, I hope we can have nice weather so we can make more contacts.  I would also like to express my  appreciation to all of the members who braved the rain last year during this event.

                Convention Theme Halloween in May

Not setting a size limit as long as you can get it to the Convention on a bike/trike.  Halloween is a time for ghost and gobblins and other scary things.  Remember the things that scared you as a child.  Grave yards, dark stormy nights, alone in your bedroom.  Things hiding under your bed.  Yep we all remember those, and other things that went bump in the night.  Use your imagination and go back to those times.

The old saying "when you're having fun, time flies" that is so true.  Here it is time for the Ground Hog to make his appearance and to buy candy and flowers for Valentine's Day and it seems as though only yesterday we were ringing in 2015.  The 1st day of January we rode with Chapter N to Guntersville "to eat and meet" with chapters Y and B.  Good way to start the new year.  On the 3rd we rode to Phoenix City  to visit with chapter M.  At their meeting they gave the District Traveling Plaque away.  There was a large number of Gold Wingers in attendance.  Lots of fun and laughs.  Chapter N took the plaque home with them.  On the 10th we attended a very informative Officer Conference in Gardendale.  Tuesday the 13th we saw where Chapter U in Dothan was having their chapter meeting.  That's south for us, sounded good.  They had several in attendance, even two couples from Panama City, Florida.  They named Jay Bird and Yvonne as their Couple of the Year for 2016.  We were so happy to be there when they put the medallions around their necks.  We are pleased to hear several chapters are now naming a Couple of the Year and also an Individual of the Year for 2016.  On the 17th we rode to Hartselle with our home chapter to eat at The Freight House.  It's now Tuesday, the 20th, and Chapter L was having a meeting in Monroeville.  Yes, that's south, so we took off to pay them a visit.  Gladys and Paul Luker are the Chapter Directors and they are working hard to keep their chapter going.  Their meeting was held at AJ's Family Restaurant.  Another place with good food.  It's now the 24th and time for Chapter N to give the District Traveling Plaque Away.  They held the Give-A-Way in Boaz at the Western Sizzlin, their meeting place.  Had a great turnout and Chapter D took the Plaque home.  Guess what, it's a Tuesday again, the 27th, and Chapter A in Mobile was having a meeting.  Only one thing for us to do, they're south, so off we went.  Talk about a good time, we got see some friends we had not seen in years.  They meet at a Morrison's Cafeteria and of course the food was good and lots of it.  Not good to have a full belly and a long ride home after 8:00 P.M..  District is holding a Horizon's Program the 31st and we plan on attending.  That's always a lot of fun.  We need to refresh ourselves.  We want to say "Thanks" one more time for giving us this opportunity to represent GWRRA as The Couple of the Year.  We are having a BLAST!
