District News
  -- District Director

March, 2015.

February is finally over, and hopefully, most of the cold weather is gone also. It has been a busy month for Alabama Leadership Training.  Greg and Renee Dempsey, the Trainers for Alabama, have had several classes in February for any member who wanted to participate. OCP, Horizons and Chapter Leadership skills were offered and all classes had good attendance. We even had a couple from Tennessee come down to take part in the classes. More classes will be offered later in the year. We attempt to schedule classes in the winter and around August, as those months are not good riding months due to the cold and heat.  Watch the District website for future classes.

March is the beginning of the Rally season for Region A beginning with the Florida District Rally. The date is March 19-21 in Kissimmee, Fl. The hotel and rally site are all together, and there is much to see and do. If you are looking for a good rally and warm weather, this rally is for you. Hope to see some Alabama folks in Florida.

The Alabama Individual of the Year nominations should be sent to us by March 1. Several chapters have individual members whom they have recognized for the good things they have done for their chapter. If you, as Chapter Director, feel they want to go further, then fill out the Nomination forms and send them to us. We will go over the nominations and pick out the one we feel is most deserving. The announcement will be made at our District rally at the beginning of the Couple selection on Friday morning.

Speaking of our rally, it is going to be here before we know it. There are several things that will be happening at our event. On Friday, there will be an actual riding Poker Run weather permitting. Al-M is working on a ride through the country with several stops to draw cards. This is something that we did years ago and slowly got away from. There is also a led ride planned for Saturday morning to the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning. If you have never been there, you need to take advantage of this ride. There will be discounts for some of the attractions and a restaurant is on site.  This is one ride you don’t want to miss.

We are looking forward to the riding season arriving and seeing all of you.

Greetings fellow riders, with another month almost in the books we are another month closer to riding season. We don’t know about you but we are definitely ready for some mild weather. It won’t be long till we are complaining about the heat! This is a good time to be prepping your bike/trike for the season. Fluid changes, brake and tire inspections are just a couple of things we can do now so when the weather does break we are ready to ride.
The rally season is just around the corner so thoughts of gathering together with friends from near and far begin to rattle around in our heads. The Florida rally is first up March 19th through the 21st. May be our first chance to see the sun and warm temps, we hope to see a great turnout from Alabama. The Alabama rally is not that far off and now is the time to be planning what you and your chapter might do while there. We are having a riding poker run on Friday and a guided ride to Columbus Ga to the National Infantry Museum on Saturday. If you have never been there you will really enjoy the visit. Remember the rally theme this year is Hallowing, A Spring Spooktacular, so dig out all those great and scary Halloween costumes and bring them with you for what promises to be a really great costume contest on Thursday night, right after dinner. And on Friday night is our annual “talent” show. Last year was a blast and we are really looking forward to seeing what new and exciting skits we are entertained with this year. There are several categories to choose from when presenting your skit and if you are interested the categories and judging sheets are available to view on the district website. Just remember, you can do just about any skit you choose but be sure to wear Halloween attire! We hope each chapter is making plans to join us and have some fun for the talent show. Should be a night to remember!
Talking about rallies, is everyone aware that we have three (3) rallies in the state of Alabama this year? First up is the Alabama rally in March in Eufaula. Second is Wing Ding in Huntsville in September. Third is the Region A rally in Eufaula in October. With this is mind we have received a really great suggestion from Ron Landers, Chapter Director of Chapter D in Anniston, Al. Ron suggested a very special occasion such as three rallies on one state in one year deserved to be recognized. To that end, we are going to have made, sometime toward the end of the year, a special commertiave vest pin made. This pin will commeriate the three rallies and will be given out in Jan of 2016 to everyone who attends all three rallies. The job of keeping the record of this attendance will be handled by the Chapter Directors. These pins are only for Alabama GWRRA members, so Chapter Directors keep this in mind while maintaining your records. We will assume that everyone is honest and will keep their Chapter Director informed of their progress. Remember, you must attend all three rallies to be eligible to receive one of these pins. We are also asking for designs for this very unique pin. If you have a design suggestion, please forward it to Robert and Gail Brown or to us. We need to have these designs in hand no later than Sept 1, 2015 but sooner would be better. Very special thanks to Ron Landers for this suggestion and please keep the suggestions coming.
In closing, please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families and all of our first responders and their families as they work to protect and serve all of us. We look forward to getting out riding again and hope to see all of you out on the road,

This year is already in full swing and I know it will be great for all of you. There is absolutely no excuse for getting bored or saying there is nothing to do as our GWRRA families are going strong with lots to do!  I hope each of you will get involved, take advantage of all the great offerings from GWRRA and the leadership and have some fun doing it.
The leadership classes offered this year have been awesome and we have had great participation.  Believe it or not, there are a lot more “educated” members and leaders out there now than there were and we look forward to them sharing their newly learned experiences with all of us. What a great organization we have and what wonderful leadership that takes the time and makes the effort to help all of us like this. Be sure to pay attention, recognize their efforts and let them know you appreciate them.  An occasional ‘thanks for all you do’ goes a long way you know!
Don’t forget to check your calendars and make your plans to attend as many or all of the upcoming events as mentioned below PLUS the great FUN DAYS planned by many of our chapters.  You will find opportunities to make new friends, share many new experiences and make memories of a lifetime just by participating.  We hope to see you there!
March 19 – 21 we have the FL District Gathering in Kissimmee FL and Bill & Gina Berry tell us it will be the best ever with a drawing for a NEW GOLDWING or $10,000 Cash!  WOW!!!
May 9 will be our MAD Day at the area Welcome Centers.
{{May 14 – 16}} is our AL District Convention in Eufaula AL with the theme of HALLOWING and it is going to be fabulous also according to Robert & Gail Brown with $1,000 grand prize.
June 18 – 20 is the Georgia Rally in Dillard Ga.  Tommy & Vicky Martin tell us to be prepared for the GOLD WING DYNASTY and you will have a blast!
July 16 – 18 is the South Carolina District presentation of PIRATES OF THE CAROLINAS in Anderson SC.  Phil and Judy Stone say be there or be square and you could win the $1,000 Grand Prize.  All vendors will be inside and it will be an experience of a lifetime.
September 3 – 5 is WING DING in Huntsville AL that is the Big Dance for the year and you have just got to be there for this one!  Make sure you get registered and go with the HUGE groups going from your chapter and have more real fun!  You will love it!!
October 29 – 31 is the Southeast Region A Convention in Eufaula AL and
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family.  Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you.  Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime!  You deserve it!  We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please be safe out there.  That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.

As I assume the duties of the District Rider Educator, I have a big favor to ask of all of the Chapter Educators:  "Please send me your monthly reports!" I need to get these from each chapter on a monthly basis, by the 5th of the month, to enable me to turn in the reports that are required from the district.  The Rider Education and Motorist Awareness reports are a very big part of what keeps GWRRA a "Not for Profit" organization.  I realize there are plenty of reports that show no classes taught in a particular chapter, but the report is still required to show the participation by the individuals who attend meetings, meals, and rides.  I would encourage the Rider Educators to say a few words about safety at every chapter event, it doesn't have to be a long drawn out speech, but the members do deserve to be reminded to be safe in their activities.

Rider Educators, or another designated individual should also be conducting a short pre-ride briefing.  This covers where the group is going, the route, communications, riding sequence, and any known hazards present along the route.  This is usually done by the "Road Captain" or designated ride lead for that particular ride, but it is necessary so the riders know what to expect.  It is also a good idea to make sure all of the riders are aware of the destination, I know, that should be obvious, but just knowing the name of the restaurant isn't always enough to get them there if the group gets separated.

Don't forget the Motorist Awareness Day on May 9th (the Saturday before the District Convention), maps of chapter assignments were included in last month's newsletter.  I hope to see all of you on the road, but I especially hope to see you at the District "Convention" (Rally by another name).

Ride safe and live long.

Well February has come to an end and boy has it been messy, cold and wet. It could be worse, we could be in Boston. LOL Hopefully March will warm up and we can get some good riding weather. Now is a good time to get your bike serviced and ready to ride. The FL. Rally is just around the corner March 19th through 21st in Kissimmee just a mile from the Mouse’s House.
Thanks to all the Chapters that competed for CHOY and News Letters. You’re all winners in a sense but there can only be one number one. Just for info when you’re doing the CHOY this time have the manual and go through each section as you’re doing the scores. Everyone should have a ride calendar in their newsletter and on their web site. Need these to send in with CHOY packet and also gives others a chance to see what you have planned.
There will be changes to the rules and scoring for 2015. You can get them here.
Or I can email you what you need.  At our rally in May we will be using the REG. A score sheet for mascots the one we were using had a section (theme of bike) I suggested a picture of bike and mascot now I realize that a picture is something else to keep up with and could get broken in travels. I will email everyone the score sheet so you can be prepared for District and Region.
Make your plans now for our Dist. Rally in MAY. There will be some new stuff going on this year. Remember Hallowing in MAY so bring your scariest outfit.
Did not do a newsletter last month due to computer problems when I set down to do it. Weren’t you glad?
  Ride safe and have fun

-- District Couple of the Year

As everyone knows February has been cold and windy.  March 20th will be the first day of spring, so warm spring weather should be near.  We have been busy visiting chapter meetings.  We even went to Panama City, Florida to visit with Chapter FL1-L.  They had lots of wind and the temperature dropped to 32* the night we were there.  They were all freezing.  Did not feel like Florida weather.  Even though the weather was cold our welcome was warm.  They had a large attendance at their meeting.  It was good to see all of them.  We stopped in Enterprise, Alabama on our way home and attended Chapter "G"  meeting.  Florida chapter met at a Po Folks Restaurant and Enterprise chapter met at Po Folks Restaurant.  So after eating two nights at the same name restaurant in two different states we knew we were Po Folks.  Gerald and Debbie Russell traveled with us.  Chapter G talked about their upcoming fun day.  It will be April 25th at Lowery Community Center.  We have been traveling south for the past month to visit with chapters.  Now it's time to head north.  We traveled to Russellville to visit with Chapter "S".  They meet for breakfast at a restaurant called Too Fat Sisters.  Good food and again lots of good fellowship.
Chapter D in Anniston had the District Plaque Give-A-Way on the 21st at their meeting place in Oxford.  Lots of members showed up and Chapter T took the plaque home with them.  They announced they will have the plaque up for grabs at Chapter Y's Fun Day , March 7th at Gardendale Civic Center.
March 19-20-21 we will be in Kissimmee, attending the Florida District Convention.  This is a FUN RALLY and they will surely have warm weather.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone!
One more thing, MARCH 8, TURN CLOCKS AHEAD, or you will be late for whatever you are going to!
